The year 2014 was a very active and interesting with tremendous improvements in security features and Big Data being put to use in very many imaginative ways. A move towards platform services including Infrastructure as a Service among others. While the year gone by was intensely active in cloud services improvements and IaaS adoption in a HUGE way, 2015 seems even more promising and exciting. However, with instances like the Sony Pictures’ attack, the iCloud hack and security breaches in retail majors’ environment namely Target and Home Depot – security on the cloud remained a hot potato.
Cloud technologies to keep an eye out for in 2015 would be Haswell CPU’s and even larger virtual machine instances than what were offered in 2014! This could be as big as 2 TB DRAM for in-memory database instances and remote direct access memory (RDMA) over an Ethernet. (CloudBox 99 already offers cloud VM’s with 1 TB of RAM as part of customized orders).
Software-Defined Networks (SDN) will continue to be an attraction, in fact, this concept seems to be catching up very fast and may become the standard along with network management designed to run stringent policies. The speed at which SDN is developing and enhancing its utility, it would be an attraction for all enterprises looking for enhanced performance and better network security. Remote direct access memory would eventually become a test bed for companies to evaluate cloud networking deployment and customizations.
BigData would continue to evolve at a rapid pace even in 2015. The adoption of cloud based clusters would likely outgrow legacy bare-metal clusters since there is a seismic move towards web server sized instances to replicate private clustering. This would also mean database tools and developers would need to build a better and smarter orchestration layer to adapt to the changes coming through, and these changes seem to be coming thick and fast!
The most influential change or shift seems to be the growth in acceptance of containers (as virtual machines) involving application hosting. The sheer cost effectiveness and portability of container concept based virtualization seems to be growing as a preferred choice. Developers, designers would have an invigorated concentration on them to include applications and component portability within the realms of “automation” and UX design. So let’s raise a toast for Year 2015 to usher in more cloud engineering, automation, adoption and above all – excitement!
